did you ever stop to think for a second that since a man's household is referred to in the masculine form, that this is the reason why the 'purification' verse (33:33) switches to masculine?
There is a much simpler reason: the Prophet is included in that verse and thus the entire group (of his wives) becomes masculine.
The basic meaning of the verse is the Prophet and his wives. Then comes the additional meaning of the `Itra (Fatima, `Ali, al-Hasan and al-Husayn), not from the Qur'an, but from the hadiths.
